"Due to COVID-19, a majority of China's urban population has remained at home for much of January and February. The outbreak has heavily impacted China'sretail industry, leading to store closures, supply chain issues and reduced foot traffic. However, as the situation in China continues to improve, we are seeing that most retailers and businesses have reopened at this point," explained Justin Sargent, President of Nielsen China, during a recent interview with CGTN where he shared insights on the outlook of China's retail sector under the influence of COVID-19.

Justin said,"We interviewed over ten thousand retailers in the last couple of weeks. The good news is, there isa high level of optimism. About half of them were very optimistic about the future. I think a lot of that is driven by the belief thatconsumption will rebound. The reality also is, with the virus overseas, most Chinese consumers will choose to stay here in China. So we should seea boost in domestic consumption."

China Retail Industry Survey
Justin continued,"The other thing interesting is that retailers clearly learn from this experience. From the survey, about two thirds of them said they would be actually investing more inonline channels and applicationsfor their consumer base. Over 50% said there wouldadjust product mixmore and more to health and safety products which they think would continue to be in demand. Over 40% would work on theirsupply chain. It has been a crisis at a very challenging time. But most retailers are looking ahead to turn the crisis into an opportunity."
